Why We Don't Chase Rankings

Rooted Education

Some schools organize their whole identity around rankings, league tables, top-of-the-list claims, the race to be number one. We made a deliberate choice to step out of that race. It’s a fair thing to ask why, so here’s the honest reasoning.

Rankings Optimize the Wrong Thing

The moment a number becomes the goal, people start serving the number. Teach to the test. Quietly steer struggling kids away. Treat children as inputs to a score. We’ve seen where that road goes, and it leads away from the kid, not toward them.

We’d rather optimize for the child in front of us. A child who is known will outgrow a child who is ranked, and we mean that as a practical strategy, not a slogan.

Not Anti-Rigor. Anti-Distraction.

Skipping the rankings race doesn’t mean lowering the bar. Our standards are real. We’re an official MSA candidate and actively pursuing MEP recognition. Our secondary program is concept-based, inquiry-driven, and built on real-world projects. Rigor stays.

What we drop is the distraction, the energy that goes into looking the best instead of doing right by each student.

What We Track Instead

We watch growth against the child, not against the kid beside them. Is a student thinking harder, taking smart risks, recovering from setbacks, giving back to the Costa Ballena community? Are they becoming a Curious, Confident Creator? Those signals don’t fit neatly on a leaderboard, but they’re the ones that predict a good life.

Our Student Support Services team and our cap of 15 or fewer per class exist so we can actually see those signals in every kid, including the ones a ranking would overlook.

A Word for the Parents Who Love a Good Number

We get it. Numbers feel safe; they promise comparison and certainty. But ask what a ranking actually tells you about whether your child will be known, challenged, and happy. Usually, very little.

We’d rather earn your trust the slow way: by knowing your kid, telling you the truth about how they’re growing, and helping them become more themselves each year.

You don’t have to choose between high standards and a school that refuses to reduce your child to a rank. Come see how we hold both. Schedule a tour on our Admissions page.
