Concept-Based Learning: How Our Teens Learn to Think

There’s a difference between knowing a fact and understanding an idea. A teenager can memorize the date of a treaty for a quiz on Friday and forget it by Monday. But if they understand why conflicts end the way they do, that travels with them. Concept-based learning is built to chase the second kind of knowing, and it’s how our secondary program works.

From Topics to Concepts

Traditional teaching often marches through topics: this chapter, then that one. Concept-based learning organizes around bigger ideas that cut across subjects, things like systems, change, power, balance, or identity.

Instead of just studying one ecosystem, students examine the concept of interdependence, then see it show up in biology, in economics, in their own community. The facts still matter. But they hang on a framework the student can actually use.

Inquiry and Real-World Projects

Concepts come alive through questions, not lectures. Our secondary students learn through inquiry and real-world projects, where they investigate, test ideas, and build something that connects to the world outside the classroom.

The Costa Ballena coast helps. Monitoring bat populations at Reserva Playa Tortuga, working alongside the Boruca community, running expeditions to San José, these aren’t field-trip extras. They’re places where abstract concepts meet real situations, which is exactly when understanding sticks.

Why It Produces Better Thinkers

When students learn to spot a concept in one place and recognize it in another, they’re doing the core move of intelligent thinking: transfer. That’s the skill that matters long after any single fact is forgotten, in college, in work, in life.

It also fits who we want our kids to become, Curious, Confident Creators, not just good test-takers. Curiosity drives the inquiry. Confidence grows from solving real problems. Creation is the project at the end.

How We Keep It Rigorous

Inquiry without structure drifts. So our teachers hold the bar high, classes stay at 15 or fewer so no one hides, and we’re an official MSA candidate pursuing MEP recognition. “Learning That Sticks” is one of our high school pillars, and it means exactly that: rigor and durable understanding, not busywork.
